Q: I am designing a house with an attached garage. Are there any hints you can offer me about what works and what doesn’t as far as design goes?
- Bob from Binghamton, NY
A: Here are three observations we’ve made from garage builders we know: First, never put a bedroom over the garage. When someone starts a car at six a.m. it will wake up anyone above. Second, consider an extra people door, so you aren’t always entering and exiting the garage through the big garage doors. This will keep more heat or air conditioned coolness inside. Third, instead of roof trusses above the garage, consider attic trusses with a floor and a stairway. All of the garage owners we’ve spoken to are grateful for the extra storage above their garages, and some use the space for living area.
